What Are Dental Implants?

Implants are small posts or screws made from biocompatible titanium. These screws are surgically placed in the jawbone and gums to replace missing teeth. Dental Implants act as artificial “tooth roots” and anchor restorations such as a crown, a bridge, or implant-supported dentures that look, feel, and function the same as natural teeth.

The Advantages of Dental Implants

  • Durability – Dental implants are durable and long-lasting.
  • Convenience – Traditional, partial, or full dentures can slip from time to time and cause discomfort. Implants are held in the jaw and do not slip. They also don’t require messy glues to stay in place.
  • Enhanced Smile & Appearance – Implants feel and look like natural teeth. They also help to maintain your confidence.
  • Improved speech – If dentures aren’t fitted correctly, they can slip inside the mouth and cause the wearer to struggle with lisps or inarticulacy. Dental implants are permanent and keep the replacement teeth in their place, allowing the wearer to speak generally without any slur.
  • Easier eating and chewing – Dental implants allow you to eat many different foods, just like your natural teeth.

Types of Dental Implant Restorations

After your implants have integrated with the bone, we can restore them with various tooth replacement options. Some of which include:

Implant Crowns

Replacing an individual tooth

A single implant and crown are one of the best choices for replacing an individual tooth. Instead of spreading out the biting forces of multiple teeth onto two teeth with a fixed bridge, we can recreate a brand-new tooth that is just as durable (if not stronger) as your natural tooth was.

Multi-tooth Bridges

Replacing multiple teeth

Considered the most robust and stable system, implant-supported bridges are a restorative dental treatment that can replace multiple missing teeth. For every tooth that is missing, one implant is placed surgically. These implants are then used to hold the bridge in place. Fixed implant-supported bridges are more cost-effective than replacing every missing tooth individually with a crown and implant.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Patients interested in dental implants must have healthy gums and sufficient bone. Dr. Theron Manson can recommend a treatment plan to achieve this if necessary. Patients interested in dental implants must also practice good oral hygiene and regularly visit the dentist. Patients who smoke or have chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and/or have had radiation treatment to the head/neck will need to be assessed at our dental office in Kirkland to determine if this restorative procedure is a safe option.

Are Dental Implants Painful?

Most of our patients with dental implant surgery report that the procedure is nearly painless. We offer sedation throughout the procedure, so you won’t feel a thing! Our Patients report that dental implants are, in fact, less painful than tooth extractions. You can also treat mild soreness post-surgery with over-the-counter pain medication like Tylenol or Motrin.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

Caring for your implants is as easy as brushing and flossing your natural teeth. With good ongoing care, you can enjoy your implant for the rest of your life! There are, however, some factors that affect the longevity and performance of individual dental implants which you should keep in mind, including:

  • Lifestyle: Certain lifestyle factors, such as smoking and diabetes, can adversely affect a dental implant’s longevity.
  • Gum Diseases: A dental implant may fail sooner than anticipated if a patient has advanced tooth decay or gum disease. An inflammation known as Peri-implantitis is a condition that affects the gums and causes a loss of the supporting jawbone.
  • Teeth Wear: Tooth grinding or clenching can cause an implant to break.
